Newcastle United Alan Shearer says he would sign Sporting CP striker Viktor Gyokeres for his former club in January if he was the manager.

The Swedish international bagged a hat-trick to help the Portuguese club demolish Manchester City 4-1 in the Champions League on Tuesday, and he has now scored 66 goals in 67 games for them..

“I would definitely be targeting a centre-forward, a right-sided forward and probably a centre-half,” the former striker replied during a Q & A on The Athletic when asked who he would target were he in charge.

“I think Newcastle are pretty much covered in most other areas, especially at full-back, so those are the three priority positions.

“Forwards are more important, I guess – I would say that, obviously! Who exactly? It depends how much you want to spend.

“There’s Viktor Gyokeres smashing goals in left, right and centre at Sporting. Manchester United may be getting Ruben Amorim, but he says he won’t be signing players from his former club in January.

!You have to target the best, and he is the best option at the moment. You’d certainly have to enquire.”

Newcastle have scored ten goals in ten Premier League games this term, and they need to do better in the final third if they want to finish in the top four.

Signing Gyokeres would be huge for the Magpies. He has a release clause of £83 million in his contract but will be allowed to leave for around £63m in the summer.

However, Newcastle will struggle to sign him in January or next summer, given the calibre of clubs monitoring the 26-year-old.

Arsenal and Chelsea have been linked with the former Coventry City striker, and more clubs will target him given his goalscoring ability.
