Ruben Selles has had a successful tenure in charge of League One Reading however takeover uncertainty remains

Due to the uncertainty over the takeover occurring at Reading, there is every possibility that manager Ruben Selles may leave Reading before the season begins - especially as there has been no clear breakthrough regarding the takeover.

Upon his arrival in Berkshire, Royals' manager Ruben Selles had an instant impact on Reading.

Whilst the on-pitch results have improved under the Spaniard, the ownership of Dai Yongge has caused loyal Royals to heavily protest his ownership of the club, with multiple cases of games being stopped due to fans invading the pitch in peaceful protest.

A hefty proportion of the Reading supporters formed a group in protest called "Sell Before we Dai" with a focus on the exclamation that Yongge should look to sell the club, as he was seemingly running it into the ground.

In March of this year, it was reported by the BBC amongst other news outlets that Dai Yongge had committed to a letter of intent with a potential buyer.

"As always with statements from Mr Dai, it provides as many questions as answers."

"This season we have been on an emotional rollercoaster. We implore the potential buyer to reach out when they can and provide reassurances."

Since this statement has been made from the "Sell Before We Dai" group, there have been no updates on the pending sale of the club, therefore meaning that Yongge is still in charge of the Royals for the upcoming season.

What does this mean for Selles?

Selles joined the club after being Ralph Hassenhuttl's assistant manager at Southampton, with the manager taking charge of one game after Hassenhuttl was sacked, a 1-1 draw in the EFL cup against Sheffield Wednesday, in which they ended up winning on penalties.

Selles then once again took charge of Southampton after Nathan Jones was sacked until the end of the 2022/23 season but the Spaniard struggled and won just two of his 17 games in charge of the Saints, when taking charge of the sinking ship.

Taking over a side who were under a transfer embargo was never going to be an easy job, however Reading and Selles managed to salvage a 17th place finish, despite their six point deduction and transfer embargo, highlighting the fantastic job that Ruben Selles did.

Since joining the club, the manager has had on-pitch success-keeping Reading afloat in League One despite losing the majority of their key players, as well as having a hostile atmosphere towards the board during every single encounter, which does not help when trying to win football matches.

The unmoving nature of the potential takeover will not have sat well with the dressing room, as under Yongge there is a genuine chance that the club will not live on for much longer, as they are currently are facing significant financial problems.

This may lead the manager, who has done a great job for the Berkshire club, to look for other managerial options - which would be a considerable blow to the Royals with Selles already beginning his pre-season preparations at Bearwood.
