Roy Hodgson steps down as Crystal Palace manager | OneFootball

Crystal Palace have announced that Roy Hodgson has stepped down from his role as first-team manager, effective immediately.

The news comes after a run of two wins in 15 games since the start of November. They also crashed out of the FA Cup in that wretched run.

The 76-year-old leaves the club after a second spell that began in January 2022. He previously managed the Eagles between 2017 and 2021.

The veteran English manager returned to steady the ship at Selhurst Park during a turbulent period led by Patrick Vieira.

However, the club parted ways with Hodgson amid fears they could get sucked into a relegation battle. They sit in 16th, six points above the dreaded drop zone.

“This club is very special and means so much to me,” Hodgson said (via the club’s official website). I have fully enjoyed my time here across six seasons, working with top-class players and staff.

“However, given recent circumstances, I believe it’s the right time for the club to plan ahead, so I’ve stepped aside to allow them to bring forward their plans for a new manager.”

Chairman Steve Parish paid tribute to Hodgson’s contribution, acknowledging his crucial role in maintaining Premier League stability.

He confirmed that Hodgson, who recently received medical attention but is now doing well, will always be welcome back at Selhurst Park.

Assistant managers Paddy McCarthy and Ray Lewington will take charge of the team for tonight’s Premier League match against Everton at Goodison Park.

The club will announce its plans for a new manager in the coming days, and it is widely expected to be former Eintracht Frankfurt coach Oliver Glasner.

The 49-year-old Austrian manager is a long-term target of Parish and director of football Dougie Freedman.

Glasner will reportedly sign a two-and-a-half-year contract and bring four staff with him.
