The Bayer Leverkusen midfielder had been publicly courted by Bayern for months, therefore it was somewhat of a surprise when it emerged that the Germany international chose the reigning Premier League champions over the Bavarian giants.

This decision prompted a rather bizarre statement from the club’s chief executive Jan-Christian Dreesen.

He said: "Much more has been written than spoken. FC Bayern is one of the absolute top clubs in Europe and the world. Our appeal among fans, but also among players, is enormous.

"The fact that not every player will end up with us is simply part of the package; it's the same for other top clubs. But everyone knows: with FC Bayern, you can win everything every year, you're involved in every competition – the upcoming Club World Cup is a good example of that.

"Just look at which clubs are represented there – and, most of all, which (clubs) aren't. The best European clubs are competing there – including FC Bayern. Our appeal, sporting ambitions, and economic power are well known to all top players around the world."

Kimmich, who was hoping Wirtz would become his teammate at club level this summer, kept his thoughts on the transfer decision brief when quizzed at a news conference ahead of Germany’s Nations League semi-final showdown against Portugal.

Kimmich said: "He will have his reasons for making this decision. I hope it's the right path for him.

“As a Bayern player, I would have naturally wanted him to come to us.”

The “right path” for Wirtz appears to be a switch to Merseyside, though there is still a lot of work to be done before a transfer can be announced.

The Reds are believed to have tabled two bids for the 22-year-old so far, the second of which was said to have totalled up to £109million including bonuses.

However, that offer was not accepted by Leverkusen as negotiations continued, with Sky Germany reporting on Sunday that they wanted either Jarell Quansah or Harvey Elliott as part of the deal, while BILD said Leverkusen were looking for €150m (£126.4m).

Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano has since revealed that Liverpool have scheduled a fresh round of talks over Wirtz this week, remaining confident and optimistic of securing an agreement soon.
