FC Bayern München’s summer strategy is taking shape, with the Bundesliga giants now intensifying their pursuit of a left winger following a failed attempt to sign Florian Wirtz. Sources close to the club indicate that Cody Gakpo (Liverpool), Kaoru Mitoma (Brighton), Nico Williams (Athletic Bilbao), and Eberechi Eze (Crystal Palace) are the primary candidates under consideration.
Bayern’s interest in Cody Gakpo first emerged publicly in March, but it is understood that internal discussions surrounding the Dutch forward go back further. The 25-year-old, who has had a mixed season at Liverpool, is viewed by Bayern’s hierarchy as a versatile and intelligent option who could fit seamlessly into their wide attacking setup.
Though Gakpo hasn’t hit the prolific heights many predicted upon his move to Anfield, his tactical flexibility and work rate have not gone unnoticed in Munich. Bayern’s scouting department believe he could thrive in the Bundesliga under a different system and with greater tactical freedom.
Kaoru Mitoma has caught the eye at Brighton with his directness, flair and one-on-one ability. The Japanese international has endured an injury-hit campaign, but when fully fit, he remains one of the Premier League’s most unpredictable wingers.
Bayern are said to be intrigued by Mitoma’s dribbling prowess and his capability to stretch defences, which aligns well with their preference for natural wingers in a 4-2-3-1 system. He would also offer a distinct contrast to Leroy Sané and Kingsley Coman, both of whom operate on the opposite flank.
Before firming up their winger shortlist, Bayern made a significant – albeit unsuccessful – push for Florian Wirtz. Details have now emerged about the club’s clandestine effort to lure the Bayer Leverkusen playmaker.
On Sunday, 18 May, a covert meeting took place in Munich. Wirtz was flown in and chauffeured from the airport directly to a hotel, bypassing the public through an underground car park. He was taken up to a private suite where high-level talks were held.
“Wirtz held talks with coach Vincent Kompany, director of sport Max Eberl, sports director Christoph Freund, CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen and supervisory board members Karl-Heinz Rummenigge and Uli Hoeneß also attended the meeting.” Despite the presence of Bayern’s most influential figures, the club failed to convince Wirtz to switch allegiances.
With Wirtz off the table, Bayern have no intention of altering their tactical approach. The club will maintain a two-winger system with Jamal Musiala occupying the central playmaker role. This further underscores their urgency to sign a new left winger who can hit the ground running.
Nico Williams and Eberechi Eze remain in contention, though Gakpo and Mitoma appear to be the favoured targets as things stand. Financial considerations, squad balance, and player preference will ultimately shape the outcome.
Bayern are expected to accelerate discussions in the coming weeks, with hopes of securing a signing before pre-season begins. While none of the shortlisted players will come cheap, the club are determined to add top-tier talent to regain domestic and European dominance.
