Switching from number 14, Ricardo Pepi has taken PSV’s number nine shirt from the departing Luuk de Jong.
Now allowing the newcomer Alassane Pléa to take his trademark 14, Pepi’s new number arrives with great importance to the American. Speaking to the club’s media at the training camp in North Rhine-Westphalia, Pepi gushed, “It’s a privilege. Many legends have worn this number at PSV. I’m taking on the challenge of writing my own history.”
When asked if he’s been in touch with De Jong, Pepi continued, “I don’t want to bother him at the moment, because I know he’s figuring out what career path he wants to take. I’m sure the club has discussed it with him. I trust he’ll make the best choice for himself. We’ve always had good conversations. We have a good relationship.”
As mentioned previously, new striker Alassane Pléa will provide competition this season. Pepi was complimentary of the new signing, but also self-assured. “I think that’s a good thing. There should always be competition. It keeps you sharp and that makes you a better player.”
“(Pléa) is a great player, of course. But I’m a great player too.”
Pepi reportedly had several good conversations with manager Peter Bosz about the upcoming season and knows what’s expected of him. “He told me they’re going to need me a lot this year. I’m obviously ready for the challenge,” said the striker, who is back on the pitch after months of rehabilitation.
The USMNT star is happy to be back after his torn meniscus. “It’s amazing. I’ve been waiting for the past five months to be back on the pitch with the team. I’m close to 100 per cent. Now it’s just the final steps I need to take.”
