Recent reports suggest Paulo Fonseca was not Milan’s first choice to replace former coach Stefano Pioli at the end of the 2023-24 campaign, and now the Portuguese is at risk of losing his job just five games into his Rossoneri career.

According to transfer expert Matteo Moretto in his Caught Offside Daily Briefing column, Milan had other ideas in mind before appointing Fonseca on a three-year contract in mid-June.

Though he may not have been the club’s first choice, the Rossoneri proceeded with Fonseca, and brought in the likes of Alvaro Morata, Strahinja Pavlovic, Youssouf Fofana and Emerson Royal.

Now, with just one win under his belt after his first five matches in all competitions, Fonseca is at risk of losing his job. Only a convincing win over rivals Inter on Sunday will be enough for him to stay in the job.

Who could replace Fonseca at Milan?

According to Moretto’s latest updates, Milan have not yet settled on a definite replacement if they do decide to dismiss Fonseca next week.

The Rossoneri have been linked with the likes of former Borussia Dortmund coach Edin Terzic, Maurizio Sarri and former Champions League winner Thomas Tuchel, but it remains to be seen which one will become the new Milan coach if Fonseca leaves.
