Chelsea’s season has taken a sharp downturn, with the excitement of early promise now giving way to increasing frustration. As Enzo Maresca navigates his first Premier League campaign, the pressure is mounting, and nowhere is that more evident than in the body language of their star man, Cole Palmer.
The 22-year-old, who dazzled in the first half of the season, now finds himself cutting a more exasperated figure on the pitch, particularly after Chelsea’s latest disappointment at Brighton. While speculation swirls about his long-term future, one thing is clear—Palmer is staying put.
A major talking point among Chelsea fans has been whether Palmer’s future at the club hinges on their qualification for the Champions League. But according to the Daily Mail, there is no such clause in his contract.
“Confidential can confirm there is no release clause relating to Europe’s elite competition in his contract. Nor do Chelsea intend to entertain offers for the 22-year-old Englishman.”
That assurance is a relief for Chelsea fans, who have seen too many top talents depart Stamford Bridge in recent years. Palmer, tied down to a lucrative nine-year deal, remains central to the club’s long-term vision.
Palmer’s recent form reflects Chelsea’s struggles as a whole. The former Manchester City playmaker was once the shining light in a young squad, scoring and creating with ease. Yet, in recent weeks, his impact has waned.
After Chelsea’s 3-0 defeat to Brighton, Palmer’s visible frustration mirrored the mood of a club unable to arrest a worrying slump. Injuries, inconsistency, and a lack of leadership on the pitch have left Chelsea with just two wins in their last nine Premier League games. Maresca’s blunt post-match assessment—“our opponents wanted it more”—only reinforced the idea that Chelsea are a side still searching for their true identity.
Despite Chelsea’s turbulent form, there is no panic from the ownership or sporting directors. As the Daily Mail reports, the club remains committed to Maresca, believing that the Italian still has the potential to build something significant.

“After Confidential spent this week sourcing the vibe inside the club, it is clear the 45-year-old Italian maintains support as we enter the home straight.”
That being said, faith does not equal blind trust. The season’s final 13-game run-in will be pivotal in determining Maresca’s long-term future. European qualification remains the target, and success in the Conference League could be a much-needed silver lining. But failure to arrest this form could lead to a summer of major decisions—about Maresca, about squad investment, and even, in the long term, about Palmer’s future.
Chelsea fans are used to success. They expect their club to be competing for the biggest trophies, not scrambling to qualify for European competitions via the back door. That’s why there is so much frustration right now—Palmer’s body language speaks for the fanbase.
The 22-year-old is an elite talent, but he cannot carry Chelsea alone. He needs better players around him, a midfield that can feed him the ball in dangerous areas, and a tactical system that maximises his strengths. Right now, Chelsea look like a side unsure of themselves, oscillating between high-energy performances and passive displays like the one at Brighton.
Maresca, for all the backing he has, needs results. Fans have seen too many managerial experiments fall apart in recent years. If Chelsea fail to secure European football, questions will be asked about whether this project is built on solid ground or whether Palmer, their brightest spark, will eventually look for greener pastures.
