We’ve just been wondering about how the lineup Enzo Maresca picked for this afternoon’s game against Aston Villa is going to look on the pitch.
Is it a back 3 with Reece James as a central defender and Malo Gusto as a right wing back? Or us Gusto playing as a proper winger? Well Maresca has just spoken to the media ahead of the game, and his answer presents a different approach:
“Reece comes in for Noni who of course isn’t with us today because he is injured. We play with full-backs to have one outside and one coming inside. Reece can do both roles so he gives us options and today he will try to help us with our gameplan,” the Chelsea manager explained.
The warmup Sky Sports have just shown had Gusto warming up as the right back of a back four as he and the others prepared their timing and alignment. Things could change in-game, but on that evidence it will be James as the more attacking of the two, contrary to expectations.

The Chelsea manager was also asked about what we could expect from Chelsea after two painful results against Brighton piled on the pressure.
The former Leicester coach promised improvement, and assured fans he and the team had been working hard to improve things:
“We have spent a lot of the week analysing last week’s game and we hope that today can be a turning point for us. We know that there are a lot of things we need to do much better.”
That’s a big promise – we desperately need a “turning point,” and this is the perfect place to get it, against one of our big rivals for the top 4.
