The media are at it again. With Rangers reportedly interested in Peterborough’s Kwame Poku, it has not taken long for the usual suspects to begin the hype train, claiming the Ghana international is the next Mousa Dembele. That is of course the ex Celtic striker, not the Belgian midfielder, and the mere suggestion that Poku is even remotely close to that level before he has even signed for Rangers is frankly laughable. But it is the usual pattern in Scottish football. If Rangers are linked to a half-decent player, suddenly he is world class. If he signs for Celtic, he is the next Henrik Larsson.
Poku has had a decent spell at Peterborough. He is a lively winger, good with the ball at his feet and can cause problems on his day. But to suggest he is going to set Scottish football alight or dominate the UEFA stage for Rangers is miles wide of the mark. At Ibrox, fans have been here before. So many summer Rangers transfer stories come packed with big claims and massive comparisons and the pressure they put on new players is ridiculous. The club are already chasing a few targets and Rangers looking to seal four player transfer blockbuster gives you an idea of the actual work going on.
What Poku needs, if Rangers do land him, is time. Time to settle, time to find his place in the squad and time to get used to the demands of Ibrox. The fanbase will expect effort and results but not if the media continue to draw comparisons to elite-level players he simply has not earned yet. It is damaging and unfair. As Rangers fans debate over calibre of Ibrox transfer targets shows, the fans themselves are not so easily fooled by flashy headlines and lazy punditry.
Rangers transfer activity this summer is about getting it right. A few exits have already been managed and the rebuild continues. If Poku is part of that plan, then fine. But let him do his talking on the pitch. Not in headlines comparing him to a £20 million ex Celtic star. As sources suggest Rangers may bid for Lennon Miller show, the real stories this summer lie in the deals, not the drama.
Sky Sports confirm Lyall Cameron completes Rangers move which is the sort of business Rangers need to keep doing. Not PR hype.
