Cyriel Dessers’ future at Rangers has taken a new turn amid conflicting claims and suggestions about his supposed move to AEK Athens. While it had been reported that a deal was all but done and the Nigerian striker was set to depart Ibrox for the Greek giants this summer, new information has surfaced which casts serious doubt on those claims. At this stage there is no agreement in place between Rangers and AEK and sources close to the player have confirmed that Dessers himself has not agreed anything either. That opens the door to the surprising possibility that the former Cremonese striker could remain at Ibrox next season.

The situation with Dessers has been a murky one and speculation has been rife ever since the close of the Scottish Premiership campaign. Rangers attacker confirms he could exit Ibrox was the initial message being carried by various outlets, with reports quickly snowballing into apparent certainty that a move to Greece was sealed. However Rangers fans voice major concerns over Dessers sale and now those concerns are being flipped on their head. Some Rangers supporters are now questioning whether the club should even keep him at all given the breakdown in talks and how public it became.

The player was expected to depart as part of Rangers’ summer rebuild under the new managerial regime. But with Rangers reaching no agreement to sell Cyriel Dessers the club faces a bit of a dilemma. If he stays, Rangers must decide whether to reintegrate him fully into the first team plans or risk carrying a high-earning asset with a questionable role. Dessers was not universally loved by the Rangers faithful last season despite finishing with a respectable goal tally.

Whether this latest development is a stalling tactic to encourage a better offer or simply a collapse of negotiations altogether is unknown. What is clear is that Dessers’ Rangers exit hits roadblock and now everything is back on the table. There is a genuine chance that Dessers will report to pre-season training and find himself back in the blue jersey for Champions League qualifiers. How fans will respond if that happens remains to be seen. But if Dessers does stay and performs well early next season he could turn the narrative in his favour again.
