The 2011 MLS regular season was a rather successful one of the Los Angeles Galaxy. With another winning record, the Western Conference juggernauts would enjoy 19 wins. One of them coming on July 30th, 2011.
The LA Galaxy not only finished the 2011 season with a record of 19-10-5 (67 points), but they secured the Supporters' Shield for the second year in a row. They did so by allowing a league-low 28 goals that season.
It's no wonder why the Los Angeles Galaxy were able to record one of two shutouts against the Vancouver Whitecaps on this date 14 years ago.
Though both teams, the Galaxy and the Vancouver Whitecaps, were held scoreless after the first half, the 0-0 tie did stand for long in the second half.
Landon Donovan's strike in the 61st minute was more than enough to give his team the win. But instead, he added his second score of the game 13 minutes later. The LA Galaxy captain would finish the regular season that year with 12 goals.
Sean Franklin joined in on the scoring for the LA Galaxy. He found the back of the net in the 81st minute. Adam Cristman did so, as well, in the 90th minute of play.
The Los Angeles Galaxy's efficiency on offense was strong and effective. Of their 17 shot attempts, all but two of them were on target. The Galaxy's keeper, Josh Saunders, recorded four saves in the game along with a clean sheet.
Fast forward 14 years, the LA Galaxy are coming off their stellar 2024 MLS season in which they not only earned the second seed in the MLS Western Conference Playoffs, but the Galaxy captured their sixth championship.
Vancouver enters this break in the same spot, the second-best team in the West. With ten games left to play, the Whitecaps are just one point out of a share of first. The LA Galaxy is unfortunately at the bottom of the MLS Western Conference standings.
