Marcelino Nunez has opened up on his Ipswich Town move after Norwich City deal.
Marcelino Nunez has opened up on his move from Norwich City to their bitter rivals Ipswich Town.
It was confirmed in the final days of the summer transfer window that the Tractor Boys sealed a move for the Chile international in a £10 million deal.
This is the first time since 2001 that a player has moved from Carrow Road to Portman Road, signing a four-year deal with the Suffolk outfit.
With the Canaries set to travel to face Kieran McKenna’s side as soon as 5 October, it will add an even further edge to the East Anglian derby if Nunez features for the hosts.
Nunez has expressed his excitement at completing a move to Ipswich, particularly thanking supporters for the welcome he’s received.
He is looking forward to getting started at Portman Road, but will have to wait until after the international break for his first appearance for the club.
“I am so excited to sign for this great club,” wrote Nunez, via his personal Instagram account.
“Thank you for such an amazing welcome - I already feel like a Tractor Boy.
“I can’t wait to play for you.”
Nunez’s last appearance for Norwich came against Portsmouth on 16 August, with the 25-year-old starting in a 2-1 win.
Nunez joined Norwich in the 2022 summer transfer window, making the move to European football from his native Chile.
The midfielder proved a key part of the side straight away, featuring 37 times in his first Championship season, contributing three goals and two assists.
He went on to play a total of 107 times in the second division, playing a key role at the base of the Canaries' midfield, with his last game even seeing him register an assist to help Liam Manning’s side earn a valuable three points against Pompey.
But his first game for Ipswich could come as soon as 12 September, with McKenna’s side set to host a struggling Sheffield United at Portman Road following the international break.
The first East Anglian derby of the 2025/26 season on 5 October between Ipswich and Norwich at Portman Road will now have an extra edge because of this switch by Nunez.
While the two clubs were able to agree terms, and a £10 million fee represents good business for the Canaries, supporters will still be understandably incredibly unhappy to sell any player, let alone one of their star performers, to their rivals.
It won’t be until April that he will have to go back to Carrow Road, but it’s a certainty that he will receive quite a reception when he does return.
