Marcelino Nunez has made the switch between bitter rivals Norwich City and Ipswich Town
Ipswich Town have confirmed the arrival of Marcelino Nunez from bitter rivals Norwich City.
It's the first time there has been a direct transfer between the two clubs since 2001, when Andy Marshall made the move to the Tractor Boys, which shows how rare a deal like this is.
Ipswich took to X to reveal a cinematic reveal video, voiced by former player Danny Haynes, who is considered by many of the fans at Portman Road a hero in the East Anglian derby, ever since he netted a brace aged just 18 to help his side beat Norwich 3-1 in 2006.
Captioned "Pledge your allegiance," Haynes goes on to say that "it takes guts to cross the divide, and only the bravest make the move." Evidently, Ipswich as a club and its fans are ecstatic not only to be bringing in a quality midfielder for the level, but also to get one over their rivals in the process.
As is always the case on X, plenty of fans have gathered in the comments section to give their views on the shock transfer of Nunez to Ipswich.
Those outside of the fanbases are expressing their pure shock at the deal, likening it to Sol Campbell, who famously made the switch between North London rivals Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal back in 2001.
The Ipswich fans are enjoying the moment. Some Tractor Boys supporters coined it "the greatest transfer announcement of all time," whilst others revel in the opportunity to poke fun at their East Anglian rivals.
Norwich fans, however, aren't seeing the funny side at all and are trying to quickly move on from what has to be an incredibly frustrating situation.
Canaries fans are looking forward to October 5th, when the two go to battle at Portman Road, with Norwich hoping to get one back up on their rivals.
Whilst the two sides meet in Suffolk in just over a month's time, it isn't until April 11th when the two face off at Carrow Road, which will likely be the first time Nunez will return to his former club, barring the two meeting in FA Cup action.
It'll be very interesting to hear the reception the 25-year-old gets when he returns to Norwich, and it'll be frosty at best.
The Tractor Boys have gotten one over their rivals off the field this summer, and will be hoping that this can continue on the pitch this season too, as they bid to put an end to a 14-game winless run in the East Anglian derby.
Ipswich last won this match in 2009, and haven't won at Carrow Road since 2006. Ironically enough, Nunez scored the winner for Norwich the last time the two met in April 2024.
If he were to contribute to ending a 16-year wait for a win in the derby, he'd be heralded as a hero at Portman Road.
