Newcastle United have been linked with a surprise move for Jamie Vardy, with reports suggesting the Leicester City legend is determined to stay in the Premier League after the Foxes’ relegation.

According to Sky Sports, Vardy does not want to play in the Championship next season and is available on a free transfer when his contract expires this summer. The 38-year-old believes he still has the ability to contribute at the top level — and Newcastle are one of the clubs being encouraged to take a closer look.

Former Premier League goalkeeper Ben Foster has even gone as far as calling Vardy an “unreal” potential signing for the Magpies.

Vardy scored seven goals in the Premier League last season for a Leicester side that created very little going forward. Despite his age, the veteran striker still managed to show sharp movement, clever link-up play, and the relentless energy that made him one of the most feared forwards in the division at his peak.

His goal tally now stands at 143 in the Premier League, and his CV includes a league title, an FA Cup, and a Golden Boot. With Newcastle in need of added experience and attacking depth, especially with question marks around Callum Wilson’s future, the move may not be as far-fetched as it seems.

Foster, speaking on the Football Fill-In podcast, said:

"Could you imagine how much Newcastle fans would love Jamie Vardy ratting around? There will be 15 Premier League teams he could sign for. Take your pick. Newcastle would be unreal."

Should Newcastle take a chance on Vardy?

There will naturally be questions about Vardy’s age and wage demands, both of which could deter Newcastle’s sporting hierarchy. But with Champions League football now off the table, and Eddie Howe reportedly seeking low-cost, high-impact options to boost the squad, a short-term deal for Vardy could provide the ideal balance of experience, personality, and Premier League know-how.

A vocal leader with a winning mentality, Vardy could also play a valuable mentoring role for the likes of Alexander Isak and Anthony Gordon as Newcastle continue to build for the future.

While there’s no concrete move yet from Newcastle, Vardy’s situation — and his clear desire to remain in the top flight — will be one to watch as the summer window approaches.

If the Magpies want to add experience without overspending, they could do a lot worse than a former Premier League winner who still believes he has more to give.
