Newcastle United ‘interested’ in signing £60m Premier League forward

There’s something joyfully contradictory about Newcastle United’s interest in Bryan Mbeumo — a signing that looks both perfectly sensible and wildly indulgent at the same time. As reported by The Telegraph, the Magpies are keen on the Brentford winger, but price-tag concerns — somewhere north of £60 million — could stall any serious push.

At 25, Mbeumo is entering his prime and has Premier League pedigree, scoring 18 goals and contributing six assists this season. Those are not speculative numbers — they’re the cold, hard stats of a forward who’s figured out how to hurt top-flight defences. More importantly, he’s the kind of flexible, press-resistant attacking weapon Eddie Howe likes: sharp on the flank, intelligent in the half-space, capable of playing through the middle.
From a recruitment standpoint, Mbeumo is a dream. “He can play wide on the right or through the middle,” the original report states — and that versatility has “impressed every member of Newcastle’s recruitment team.” It’s clear that Howe doesn’t want another luxury winger; he wants a Swiss Army knife of a footballer.
But then comes the kicker. £60 million, and that’s before the bidding war starts. Brentford, ever shrewd in the market, are under no pressure to sell, and as Thomas Frank admitted, “if the right price, that is going to be expensive.”

With a goalkeeper, centre-back, and possibly a striker also on the shopping list, something’s got to give. “It is unlikely they would be able to sign both [Mbeumo and Delap]… without selling someone too.”
Newcastle are not paupers, but they’re not limitless either. What separates them from the ‘state project’ caricature is that they still have to make sensible decisions. So does Bryan Mbeumo fit into a coherent plan — or is he simply a trophy for Newcastle’s rising status?
Bryan Mbeumo, the goals, the guile, the graft. Honestly, the lad’s numbers speak for themselves. Eighteen goals and six assists in this Brentford side? Imagine what he could do at St James’ Park with Isak up top and Gordon on the other flank.
Yes, £60 million is a lump, no doubt. But this is the going rate for elite-level attacking players in the Premier League. If Newcastle are serious about breaking into that top four, they need to stop dithering and start delivering. Get the cheque book out. This is what ambition looks like.
More than that, Mbeumo plays like a Newcastle player. Relentless, fearless, with an eye for a moment. “Thriving,” as Thomas Frank said.
