Newcastle United are interested in signing Aston Villa midfielder John McGinn this summer, according to the Daily Mail.

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe wants to reinforce his midfield options by signing McGinn after Sean Longstaff left for Leeds United and Joe Willock picked up a possible long-term injury last week.

The billionaire-owned Magpies are convinced that the 30-year-old would be a solid addition to their midfield, and he could be available.

He played in 49 games across all competitions last season, weighing in with four goals and six assists.

Newcastle could do with his quality as they look to impress in the Champions League next term and challenge for major silverware again after winning the League Cup last season.

The Villa star has two years remaining on his contract, and this summer could be the best time to sell him. However, Villa have already rebuffed interest from Everton.

Villa need to sell some of their top stars as they desperately try to remain compliant with financial rules after UEFA fined them earlier this summer for breaching their regulations.

McGinn could be sacrificed after seven seasons at the Midlands club, and the opportunity to play in the Champions League and win silverware could be appealing to the Scottish ace.

He has played 203 Premier League games for Villa and made a total of 285 appearances, bagging 30 goals and 40 assists.

The chance to play elsewhere could be tempting to the former Hibernian star.
