Newcastle United have created a four-player shortlist of centre-forward targets amid Benjamin Sesko’s preference for a move to Manchester United.
Eddie Howe’s side have submitted a €90m club-record bid for Leipzig striker Sesko, but look set to miss out on his signing. Sesko has indicated his preference is Manchester United, who have submitted a rival offer for the 22-year-old.
It continues a frustrating summer in the transfer market for Newcastle, who have endured several rejections. Targets including Liam Delap, Joao Pedro, and Hugo Ekitike have all turned down the Magpies in favour of Premier League rivals.
With Alexander Isak pushing for an exit and Callum Wilson having departed for West Ham, it leaves Newcastle in need of reinforcements.
According to journalist Ben Jacobs, Newcastle have four players as potential alternatives to Sesko. Brentford forward Yoane Wissa remains an option after an earlier rejected approach. Chelsea’s Nicolas Jackson is another under consideration despite a substantial asking price.
Newcastle are also weighing up moves for Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins and Lois Openda, of RB Leipzig.
Watkins has been linked with an exit from Aston Villa and is valued at around £60m. It remains to be seen whether Newcastle would match that asking price for a player who turns 30 in December, despite Watkins’ proven track record in the Premier League.
A move for Openda could be complicated by Sesko’s imminent exit at Leipzig. The German side are also set to sell Xavi Simons this summer and would be reluctant to lose all three players in the same window.
Openda has scored 41 goals in 89 games since joining Leipzig from Lens in 2023.
