Millwall made an encouraging start to the season under Harris, but they have since slipped to 11th in the Championship table, and the 47-year-old apparently feels as though the time has come for a new man to come in.

The former Millwall striker was appointed for a second spell in charge at The Den in February, and guided the club to safety in the second tier at the end of last season.

Millwall have confirmed that Harris will step down from his role as head coach following the trip to Middlesbrough on Saturday.

Chairman James Berylson provided an explanation via the club website.

“At the start of 2024, we found ourselves in a tough spot," said Berylson.

"Neil came in and along with his coaching staff galvanised the squad. Through action and leadership, he led Millwall on a magnificent run of form, ensuring our return to Championship football this season.

“After discussions with Neil in recent days, he felt it was the right time to step down from the role following the Middlesbrough game and I have accepted his decision."

“I join everybody associated with Millwall by wishing Neil the very best. He will always be welcome back to The Den as a friend, colleague, and Lion."

This is not the first time that Harris has resigned from his position at The Den, having also stepped down at the end of his first stint as manager in 2019.

He was left frustrated after his side failed to see out an away win against Oxford United a couple of weeks ago, before citing the absence of Jake Cooper, Japhet Tanganga and Romain Esse as a key reason why his team was beaten by Frank Lampard's Coventry City last time out in an interview with Coventry Live.

“So just a reminder to people, the thickos, that when you take the three best players out of the team that this is Millwall Football Club," stated Harris.

Millwall must find a replacement for Harris

Millwall will have a bit of time to find a replacement for Harris, with the club set to appoint an interim head coach after Harris officially leaves the club following the game against Middlesbrough this weekend.

Director of Football Steve Gallen spoke about the process that will be undertaken to find a new head coach via the club website.

“We respect Neil’s decision and he departs with the best wishes of everybody at the club. Since I joined in May, I have enjoyed my time working alongside Neil and I thank him for his efforts during this period," said Gallen.

“A comprehensive recruitment process is already underway for a new head coach. The direction we as a club want to head in is clear and the next head coach will play a pivotal role in helping us execute our strategy.”

Harris will be hoping to leave the club on a high, with the home game against Sheffield United tomorrow night and the trip to Middlesbrough this weekend set to be his final two games in charge.
