AC Milan have reached an agreement in principle with Matteo Gabbia over the extension of his current contract, a journalist has claimed.
As a boyhood Milanista, Gabbia’s story has been quite a wholesome one to follow. He graduated from the youth sector and became a squad player, then going on loan to Lucchese and most recently Villarreal, for the 2023-24 season.
However, his loan in Spain was cut short by six months due to an injury crisis in the defensive department at Milan. When he returned he found more regular starts and the Italian certainly impressed, becoming the most reliable of a struggling centre-back group.
That has continued into this season, and he has just recovered from a troublesome calf issue that has kept him out since the Champions League win over Club Brugge. He will return for the game against Juventus in two days, and in the meantime some news has arrived regarding a renewal.
According to what is being reported by Matteo Moretto of Relevo, Milan have an ‘agreement in principle’ with Gabbia over a contract extension. It will see the deadline shift to 2029, therefore a four-year extension (when the deal kicks in).
It is a fitting reward for a player who has always shown attachment to the shirt, has worked hard for a spot and has become a hero in the eyes of fans after his winning goal in the derby against Inter in September.
