Kylian Mbappé has claimed his first Golden Boot in his debut season with Real Madrid.
The race for Europe’s top scorer award went right down to the wire, with Mbappé just edging out Viktor Gyokeres and Mohamed Salah on the final weekend of the season.
Gyökeres faced a tougher challenge throughout the 2024/25 campaign. Playing in the Portuguese league, his goals carried a lower coefficient (1.5 points per goal) compared to those in the top five European leagues, which are weighted at 2 points per goal.
On top of that, the Primeira Liga features just 34 matches, fewer than the Spanish or English top flights. Despite that, the 26-year-old Swede managed to score a remarkable 39 league goals, more than both Mbappé and Salah, but still missed out on the award due to the scoring system.
Mbappé overtook Gyökeres on Saturday, netting twice in Real Madrid’s 2–0 win over Real Sociedad on the final day of the La Liga season.
With Mbappé finishing top, Gyökeres was denied the chance to emulate Mário Jardel — the last player from outside Europe’s top five leagues to win the Golden Boot. Jardel bagged 42 goals for Sporting in 2001/02, having previously achieved the same feat with Porto in 1998/99.
Salah, meanwhile, still had a shot at snatching the award on Sunday. He needed a hat-trick against Crystal Palace to leapfrog Mbappé, but only managed the equaliser in a 1–1 draw at Anfield. That wasn’t enough to even surpass Gyökeres, who takes a very respectable second place.
