Olympique de Marseille president Pablo Longoria has admitted his frustration after the Ligue 1 side failed to complete the signing of Real Madrid midfielder Dani Ceballos.

Speaking to El Chiringuito TV, Longoria revealed that negotiations dragged on far too long, ultimately leading the club to walk away.

“Dani Ceballos transfer? I’m exhausted. Tired. We were really interested, but there are circumstances we can’t control,” Longoria said, while also praising Real Madrid for handling the talks “with total class.”

Marseille had reached a full agreement with Los Blancos, who were prepared to sanction a season-long loan with an obligation to buy for €15 million.

The French club had even offered Ceballos a four-year contract running until 2029. Everything seemed ready, but the deal collapsed when the midfielder hesitated to give the final approval.

Ceballos prefers Betis over Marseille

The reason for the delay was Ceballos’ strong desire to return to his boyhood club, Real Betis.

Reports suggested that the 29-year-old put the Marseille transfer on hold in the hope that Betis would step in.

However, the La Liga side does not have the financial resources to match Madrid’s demands.

Real Madrid, for their part, made it clear that they would only consider Betis if the offer matched Marseille’s proposal – €15 million and the same loan-to-buy structure.

So far, no official offer has arrived from Betis, leaving Ceballos in limbo.

Madrid’s midfield decision

For now, Ceballos remains a Real Madrid player, though his role under Xabi Alonso looks uncertain.

Injuries and inconsistency have prevented him from cementing a place in the squad, and Madrid were open to letting him go this summer.

While Marseille have now pulled out of the race, Ceballos’ wish to rejoin Betis keeps the door slightly open.

Unless Betis can find a way to raise funds, though, the Spaniard may have no choice but to stay at the Bernabéu for another season.
