The former Hoops’ hitman departed the club this January transfer window for French side Stade Rennais, and with the team still fighting on multiple fronts, many thought it was an odd decision from the club to let him go to Ligue 1.

£9 million – decent money for a 30 year old striker

The 30-year-old was sold for around £9 million and some would argue that is decent money for someone approaching the twlight of his playing career. Kyogo joined the Bhoys from Vissel Kobe in 2021 for £4.6 million and was an integral part of the footballing machine that Ange Postecoglou went on to build, before his untimely exit to Tottenham Hotspur in the English Premier League.

Celtic seem to be coping well without the diminutive forward so far, with Adam Idah really stepping up since his comrade vacated the number one striking spot. With the return of Jota to Paradise too and goals coming from all over the team, the manager is definitely spoiled for choice at the minute. Tony Docherty’s men found that out last night when the Scottish Champions turned his Dundee side over in a 6-0 trouncing, with multiple goals from multiple areas of this Celtic side.

‘Kyogo has been unhappy’

However, Hugh MacDonald has given a bit of information about Kyogo’s move away from club and insisted that he had been unhappy since well before last summertime. Speaking to PLZ Soccer this week, he said: “Kyogo has been unhappy. I mean it’s like all these stories unfolding. You get more detail, more detail with talking to people. Kyogo’s been unhappy not just during the summer, but before the end of last season.

“And apparently, you know, Brendan was comfortable with that. It wasn’t as if he was going and saying, ‘oh please don’t go.’ I mean, he’s been quite vocal about it in press conferences. I thought that was quite a strong line in his press conference the other day when he was addressing it. He actually faced up and addressed it, saying ‘fans might be saying blah, blah, blah about Kyogo. But they don’t know what I know.”

A real joy across our front line

Celtic don’t want or need want-away players. Last night there was a real joy across our front line with Jota back in the fold, Adam Idah absolutely thriving since Kyogo left,  Nicolas Kuhn scoring a word-class goal and Daizen Maeda elevating himself to Larsson comparisons, top scorer and new POTY favourite.

It certainly beats seven touches against Strasbourg.
