Klopp Sparks Firestorm with Club World Cup Criticism - Guardiola and Stoichkov React
Jurgen Klopp's ignited fresh controversy after labeling the new 32 team Club World cup as the "worst idea in football history" citing increased injury risk & player fatigue.
The former Liverpool manager didn’t mince words:
"It’s all about the game not the commercial side. The timing and length of this tournament make it the worst idea ever implemented in football"
Guardiola: "I Understand Him, But We Don’t Set the Rules"
Speaking ahead of Manchester City’s Round of 16 clash with Al Hilal, Pep Guardiola addressed Klopp’s comments:
"Jurgen always defends the players. I respect his view but we don’t decide the calendar we follow what fifa and the leagues schedule"
He added that both had long fought to reduce fixture congestion in England and he shares Klopp’s concerns.
Legendary Bulgarian forward Hristo Stoichkov fired back particularly targeting Klopp & Barcelona’s Raphinha who'd mocked players being pulled from vacation:
"Players earning 20 million euros shouldn’t be complaining. We played tougher tournaments with fewer substitutions and less rest"
"Raphinha wasn’t even called up Barca didn’t qualify. Now he’s whining? He’ll be in the U.S next year with Brazil, so calm down"
Referring to Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca’s weather complaints, Stoichkov said sarcastically:
"Should we give Gianni Infantino remote control to stop the storms?"
