Charlton Athletic have made a positive start to the summer transfer window as they prepare for life back in the Championship next season.

The Addicks have brought in attacking midfielder Sonny Carey on a free transfer from Blackpool, goalkeeper Thomas Kaminski for a fee in the region of £1 million from Luton Town, and forward Isaac 'Tanto' Olaofe for around £1.5 million from Stockport County so far this summer.

Nathan Jones will no doubt want to bring in further reinforcements as he shapes his squad ahead of what will be a challenging 2025/26 campaign in the second tier.

With that in mind, let's take a look at what would make July a dream month in the transfer window at The Valley.

Gassan Ahadme moves on

Gassan Ahadme joined the Addicks last summer for a fee worth up to £1 million, but he did not live up to expectations during his debut season in SE7.

The striker only scored once in 19 League One appearances over the course of the 2024/25 campaign, with his only other goals coming against sides from lower divisions in the FA Cup.

If Charlton can recoup some of the money they spent on Ahadme and get him off the wage bill this month, then it would be a real bonus for the club.

Other players that could potentially give Charlton some extra money to put towards a dream July if they are sold this month include Terry Taylor, Ashley Maynard-Brewer and Alex Mitchell.

Defensive reinforcements are brought in

Charlton boasted an excellent defensive record which gave them the foundation to win promotion via the League One play-offs last season, but one or two quality additions this summer would be more than welcome to ensure they can continue to keep clean sheets in the division above.

The Addicks have been linked with Sheffield Wednesday centre-back Akin Famewo, while they were also reportedly interested in defenders Amadou Mbengue before he completed his move to Queens Park Rangers and Odeluga Offiah prior to him joining Preston North End.

The South Londoners also had a £1.3 million bid for Ethan Galbraith rejected by Leyton Orient last month, and while he would have provided another quality option both in midfield and at right-back, Swansea City are now in pole position to win the race for his signature, as was exclusively revealed by Football League World.

If Charlton can bring in one or two proven Championship defenders in July, then it would contribute towards it being a dream month in the transfer window for the club.

Davis Keillor-Dunn signs

Barnsley forward Davis Keillor-Dunn was a standout player in League One last season, and if Charlton are able to complete an ambitious move to sign him in July, then it would certainly be a dream come true for the supporters.

The Barnsley Chronicle reported that both Charlton and Middlesbrough were interested in the 27-year-old earlier this summer, although it could take a fee in the region of £5 million for him to leave Oakwell during the current transfer window.

The Addicks will need to score enough goals if they are going to be competitive in the Championship next season, and signing a player with the quality of Keillor-Dunn would definitely help them do just that.

Young players leave on loan to gain experience

Several academy graduates were given opportunities to prove themselves in League One by Nathan Jones, including Zach Mitchell, Josh Laqeretabua and Micah Mbick.

The Addicks have plenty of promising young players who could benefit from temporary spells away from The Valley next season. The likes of Mitchell, Laqeretabua, Mbick, Alan Mwamba, Ibrahim Fullah, Kai Enslin, Nathan Asiimwe and Kaheim Dixon all have something to offer which could benefit clubs in lower divisions.

Football League World exclusively revealed that AFC Wimbledon are in talks to take striker Daniel Kanu on loan as they prepare to return to League One this season, in what would be a perfect example of a move that could benefit Charlton's youngsters if it is agreed this month.
