Manchester City players sing songs towards John Stones in the middle of some matches, the central defender has revealed in a new interview.

Becoming one of Pep Guardiola’s first signings upon joining Manchester City in the summer of 2016, Stones has been a mainstay in the heart of the Etihad Stadium defence and operated in a number of other roles since.

Stones’ footballing development under Guardiola has been sensational, with his intelligence on the ball and positionally being one of the highest in the squad, allowing him to fulfil a number of tactical instructions under the Catalan coach.

Most notably, in the 2023 UEFA Champions League final against Inter Milan, Stones took on a deep-lying defensive midfield role whilst advancing into a number eight position at times to advance play into forward areas.

And the former Everton man’s major moments in a City shirt, including last-minute winners against Arsenal and Wolves, as well as a historic goal-line clearance against Liverpool, have established him as a firm fans’ favourite earning numerous chants in the process.

Quizzed by the Club’s official website on whether he knows all of the chants that feature his name, John Stones replied, “I haven’t a clue if I’m honest! There’s a few, I know that and obviously I know the ones the lads sing to me – one in particular! Super special, it really is.”

The 30-year-old continued, “How does it make me feel? It makes me feel really, really good and I get a lot of banter from the boys about it.

“They will start singing it constantly around the place or in the changing room or even during games when our fans are singing they join in! It’s nice to be appreciated like that and I appreciate it as well.”

John Stones is also a father of three off the pitch, and when asked by Manchester City whether his children know his songs sung by supporters, he admitted, “They know them, but they won’t sing them around me!”

Stones’ current Manchester City contract runs until the summer of 2026, and while there is no hurry from either party to clarify his future, it is expected that Etihad Stadium officials will seek to agree on a contractual extension at some stage in the near future.

Given the Barnsley-born defender’s affection for the Etihad Stadium and life at Manchester City, it is also highly likely that he and his representatives would be all too welcoming of an extended stay with the football club.
