Hull City are eyeing up a move for the former Newcastle United and Liverpool midfielder
Hull City are in talks to sign Jonjo Shelvey.
The 33-year-old is a free agent once more following his departure from Burnley.
Shelvey joined the Clarets in January on a short-term deal and made four appearances for Scott Parker’s side.
Shelvey could be set to continue his stay in the Championship next season with Hull City.
According to Alan Nixon via his Patreon, the veteran midfielder is in contact with the Tigers over a potential move this summer.
His willingness to ply his trade in England means that he is keen for a move to the MKM Stadium and Hull seem to share the sentiment.
Prior to his time with Burnley, the 33-year-old played out of Turkey with sides such as Eyüpspor and Rizespor.
Shelvey featured over 200 times for Newcastle and was a key cog in the Magpies’ outfit that won the Championship in 2017.
Hull retained their second-tier status on goal difference last season and would benefit from some extra experience to spearhead their dressing room.
New boss Sergej Jakirovic will appreciate Shelvey’s valuable insight as he adapts to managing in English football, which could be another reason Hull are pursuing a move.
Admittedly, the 33-year-old’s best days are behind him, and he can’t be expected to feature week in, week out across 46 games in the Championship.
His spell at Burnley was frustrating to say the least, making just four appearances and looking significantly off the pace when he played.
That said, his time in Turkey may have slowed him down and therefore required a period of acclimatation when moving back to the English game in East Lancashire.
If given a full pre-season at Hull, Shelvey could produce a much more competitive version of himself next season.
He’ll never lose the technical attributes that saw the midfielder compete at the highest level for multiple years and could therefore play an important role in the Tigers’ side next term.
As previously mentioned, the experience and know-how he can bring to a dressing room sorely lacking in such attributes can’t be undervalued and is potentially the driving force behind Hull’s interest.
