How do Rangers ship out £30,000pw Ben Davies?

The biggest problem Rangers have this summer is turnover, and in particular, shifting surplus players who are on massive wages.

It’s one thing to sign a whole batch of new players, but quite another to sell or release players who are on fat contracts and massive wages.

In short, who is going to take Tom Lawrence? Ben Davies? Todd Cantwell?

The likes of these guys and indeed Dutchman Sam Lammers are on over £22,000 a week, and that’s not an easy wage to lump onto another club, especially a League One, Championship or any European league outside of the big five.

Add the injury history for many of them and Rangers can just be thankful the likes of Kemar Roofe and Ryan Jack were out of contract this summer.

Because finding buyers for Ben Davies who have the resources to fund his utterly appalling £30,000pw salary will be very, very hard.

That’s a wage into mid Premier League level, not lower, and we highly doubt any PL side wants Davies, or indeed any other cast offs from Ibrox.

And of course, the transfer fees.

Rangers don’t want to write off £4M for Davies, £2M for Cantwell, £3.5M for Lammers or even £3M for Rabbi Matondo, whose Rangers future isn’t overly certain either.

He is also another one on a ridiculous wage, a £30kpw drain that will be close to impossible to shift.

The problems on Rangers’ roster are about getting value for money – and there’s a lack of it with the fat salaries doled out to those who really don’t seem to be that value for that.

And getting them off is so far not going well.

Rangers have released five players, but shipping out players on the big numbers who are killing the finances is much, much harder.
