Lauren Hemp’s goal helped the Lionesses beat Wales 6-1 in their final game of Group D and progress to the Euro 2025 quarter-finals.
City captain Alex Greenwood and Jess Park also helped Sarina Wiegman’s outfit earn the three points England needed to finish second and book a quarter-final tie with Group C winners Sweden.
The Lionesses, locked in a three-way battle for qualification with France and the Netherlands, started the day in the second and final qualification spot and knew a win would guarantee their spot in the last eight.
And it was an electric start from the holders, who found the lead after just 13 minutes when Georgia Stanway converted from the penalty spot, before Ella Toone doubled England’s lead eight minutes later with a close-range rebound.
Hemp added her name to the scoresheet with a daring header at the back post on the half-hour mark as England continued to dominate.
And before the break Alessia Russo made it four with a composed finish.
At the start of the second half, Hemp was replaced by Beth Mead, while Park picked up her first minutes at the tournament in place of Toone.
Wales sat deeper as time ticked on which made it more difficult for England to find space to attack.
But perseverance paid off for Mead on 72 minutes when she converted England’s fifth.
Wales substitute Hannah Cain grabbed a consolation with just under 15 minutes left to play before Aggie Beever-Jones scored her first goal in a major tournament for her nation to complete the evening.
England’s quarter-final clash with Sweden will take place at 20:00 (UK) at Stadion Letzigrund on Thursday 17 July.
