With the Bundesliga now reaching its conclusion with Bayern Munich crowned as champions after reclaiming their crown from Bayer Leverkusen, Get German Football News unveils the winners of our annual awards.

GGFN Bundesliga Player of the Season – Michael Olise

Michael Olise has been a revelation at Bayern Munich. From swapping South London to Munich, a mid-table Premier League team to a European giant, the Frenchman certainly had to hit the ground running. After his €53m move from Crystal Palace, few could have predicted the impact that the 23-year-old would have in his maiden Bundesliga campaign.

With 30 goal contributions (12 goals and 18 assists) in 34 Bundesliga games, Olise has moulded himself into one of Europe’s leading players. No player made more passes into the penalty area than Olise (111) across Europe’s Top 5 Leagues this season, nor had a higher Expected Assists (12.5). The Frenchman – who predominately operated on the right flank – also registered 169 Shot-Creating Actions and 90 Key Passes, the most of any Bundesliga player.

A standout performer, Olise also ranked high in Progressive Passes (98th percentile), Shot-Creating Actions (98th percentile) and aways made himself available, again ranking in the 98th percentile, for Progressive Passes Received. GGFN Bundesliga Young Player of the Season – Hugo Ekitiké

If Omar Marmoush had never left Eintracht Frankfurt in the winter, this could have been a very different story. However, after the Egyptian departed, Ekitiké became the man for die Adler. The Frenchman was already having a good season, but the spotlight was now on him as he was the club’s sole striker, and he thrived.

The striker joined Frankfurt 18 months ago and struggled in his first six months at the club as he found his feet after struggling at PSG, but this season, he has begun to deliver on the promise he held while at Reims.

Ekitiké is a unique striker who combines a physical presence with great technical ability. The 22-year-old finished the season with 15 goals and eight assists in 33 games and was the driving force behind Frankfurt’s Champions League qualification.

Ekitiké will be the next striker that Frankfurt sell for a nearly triple-digit million fee, whether that be this summer or next, following in the footsteps of Luka Jovic, Randal Kolo Muani, Sebastien Haller and Marmoush. All signs point towards him following his former teammate to the Premier League. Jack Meenan

GGFN Bundesliga Coach of the Season – Vincent Kompany

Vincent Kompany arrived at Bayern Munich with a monumental task on his hands. After the Rekordmeister failed to secure the 2023/24 Bundesliga title, losing out to Bayer Leverkusen, it was imperative that the Belgian brought the Meisterschale back to Bavaria. Upon his appointment, many questioned his pedigree as a manager. Sure, he earned promotion with Burnley but they finished 19th in the Premier League the following season with just five wins in 38 games, and he hadn’t won anything in 90 games at Anderlecht, averaging just 1.7 PPM.

But he hit the ground running in Germany. Playing 4-2-3-1 in all but one Bundesliga game, Bayern Munich didn’t suffer a league defeat until matchday 14, against Mainz 05. Bayern’s 82 points after 34 games was the most the Rekordmeister had recorded since the 2017/18 season, and they were just one goal shy of 100 league goals this season, while boasting the best defence with just 32 goals conceded despite defensive injuries and a change of goalkeepers.

The difference from Kompany’s first couple of months in charge to the latter games of the season is certainly noticeable too. Not only has his players developed but so has the Belgian. Kompany and Bayern now have a clear philosophy, and his inspiration and drive transpires to his players. Bayern have been a force to be reckoned with this season and no team has gotten close. DP

GGFN Bundesliga Signing of the Season – Michael Olise

Olise’s season is best summed up by the fact that he also scooped up the GGFN Player of the Season award. The Frenchman ended the season with 12 goals and 18 assists, and with key injuries to Jamal Musiala and Harry Kane in Bayern’s attack, Olise showed how important he is going forward.

A year on after Bayern spent €50m for the 23-year-old, it already looks like a bargain. JM

GGFN Best German Abroad – Yann Aurel Bisseck

Bisseck has rarely featured in the Bundesliga during his short career. The former Köln player developed in Denmark at Aarhus before moving to Inter Milan in 2023

After a slow start in his first season in Milan, Bisseck has now played his way into being an integral part of the Inter defence that has seen them reach the Champions League final and fighting Napoli to the very end for the Serie A title. The 24-year old’s performances this season even saw him earn a call up to the German national team back in March where he made a 13 minute cameo against Italy.

Bisseck has shown moments of still being raw this season, but he is overall on course to develop into a potential starter for Germany in the future. JM

GGFN Moment of the Season – Arminia Bielefeld reaching the DFB Pokal final

The great thing about this moment is that it can get even better. The fact that Bielefeld are in the final is already a monumental occasion, but the fact that they could possibly win it could take the whole thing up a level.

How Bielefeld even reached this point is remarkable. In each round, they faced teams in leagues above them, beating Hannover, Union Berlin, Werder Bremen and Bayer Leverkusen. The game against the defending champions was the standout, as it wasn’t a case of simply sitting back and waiting for the opportunity. Bielefeld took the game to Leverkusen and thoroughly outplayed them.

They will get their big moment in Berlin this Saturday, and considering Stuttgart’s recent form, there is a real chance that Bielefeld could make the impossible possible and put the city on the map. JM
