The Buckinghamshire-based outfit are keen to land the 24-year-old midfielder this summer, and have reportedly been chasing his signature for a couple of weeks now.

The Blues had a sub-£1m bid turned away by Barnsley a couple of weeks ago, according to reports from Mike Keegan, and were told that if the fee wasn't seven figures, it wasn't even worth having the conversation.

Wanderers then reportedly went in with a second bid, but this was also turned down, according to The Barnsley Chronicle. A couple of hours later, The Bucks Free Press then suggested that Wycombe had finally made a breakthrough, with a £1.3m bid being accepted.

However, Andy Giddings of BBC Football Heaven later came out and said that these earlier reports were actually incorrect, and the Yorkshire-based club had yet to have an improved bid accepted for the Irishman.

Fresh twist emerges as Luca Connell bid not accepted by Barnsley

The unfolding situation between the two clubs has become rather messy over the last few days, with conflicting reports from The Bucks Free Press of the third bid from Wycombe being accepted, which have now been claimed as false by Giddings.

The Football Heaven reporter took to X on Friday evening to state that, contrary to other reports, the Tykes had not accepted a bid from their League One rivals for the midfielder.

Now the initial reports from yesterday have been disproved, there is now no evidence to suggest that the Chairboys have even lodged a third bid for Connell, and it remains unclear whether they will ramp up their offer following the second setback.

In an update this morning, James Richings, who initially reported about the accepted bid, relayed that he'd been told conflicting information, and now the Yorkshire club are 'adamant' that they've not accepted any proposal from the Buckinghamshire outfit.

Since the situation surrounding Connell has become extremely confusing for supporters of both clubs, conflicting reports from different sources have made the story extremely hard to follow, but we can piece together a known timeline of events.

As initially reported by Mike Keegan of the Daily Mail on July 2nd, Wycombe had a 'substantial bid' rejected by Barnsley for the player, and were told that a conversation wouldn't be had if the fee wasn't seven figures.

Later reports then suggested that a second bid in excess of £1m had been made, but The Barnsley Chronicle then confirmed that this second bid had also been turned down by the Tykes.

Now we know that the Chairboys haven't had a third offer of £1.3m accepted, as was suggested on Friday afternoon, as Giddings has now confirmed that these reports weren't correct.

So the latest we know about the saga is that the second bid was rejected, and there are no reports to suggest any further progression in any potential deal. Connell was also named in the starting XI for Barnsley to take on Rangers on Saturday lunchtime.

It remains unknown whether Mike Dodds' side will make a third approach for the 24-year-old, who is a top target for the Buckinghamshire club this summer, as they look to improve on last season's disappointing end.
