Newcastle United have endured a tough transfer window this summer. The optimism brought on by Champions League qualification has subsided, as the Magpies have struggled to get deals over the line.
Having already missed out on Liam Delap, Joao Pedro and Bryan Mbeumo despite expressing interest, Eddie Howe is set for more disappointment.
Hugo Ekitike has agreed a deal to sign for Liverpool despite a bid from Newcastle earlier this month, while Manchester City are pushing to sign long-term target James Trafford.
Newcastle remain keen to sign a goalkeeper, centre-back and forward before September’s deadline, as the Magpies aim to strengthen ahead of their Champions League return.
With top targets having turned down a move to St James’ Park, we’ve profiled some options who could help the club in key positions.
Could James Trafford’s turn towards Manchester City open up a deal for Lucas Chevalier? The Frenchman is recognised as one of Europe’s best young stoppers, but interest has been minimal this summer with several top clubs set in goal.
Newcastle could capitalise, for a player who ousted Gianluigi Donnarumma to be named as Ligue 1’s Best Goalkeeper in 2024/25.
Newcastle saw an offer in the region of £70m turned down for Guehi last summer and remain interested in a deal. The England international has just 12 months to run on his contract at Crystal Palace and has shown no willingness to sign an extension.
Liverpool have been heavily linked with the 24-year-old as a potential replacement for Jarell Quansah, though Guehi wants assurances over his minutes in a World Cup year. Newcastle could offer that, alongside the Champions League stage.
Kim Min-jae is open to leaving Bayern Munich this summer after a tricky second season in Germany. The South Korean is reported to have held talks with English clubs earlier this year, while Galatasaray are also pursuing a deal.
He has faced some criticism for individual errors at Bayern, but has proven his quality with key roles in Serie A and Bundesliga title successes.
Min-jae ranked in the top 5% of Bundesliga centre-backs last season for attempted passes, pass completion, progressive passes and ball recoveries per 90, and in the top 15% for aerial duels won.
Georges Mikautadze could be on the market amid Lyon’s financial issues. The Georgian joined Lyon last summer from Metz and scored 17 goals in all competitions last season. His return was more impressive given limited involvement, averaging a goal or assist every 91 minutes across Ligue 1 and the Europa League.
Comfortable dropping deep and able to impact games off the bench, he could be a smart signing to complement Alexander Isak.
Newcastle are interested in signing Yoane Wissa from Brentford but face a task to convince the Bees to sell. Having lost Christian Norgaard and Bryan Mbeumo already this summer, alongside manager Thomas Frank, Brentford are reluctant to lose the DR Congo forward.
Wissa scored 19 goals in the Premier League last season, none of which came via the penalty spot. His 19 non-penalty goals were level with Erling Haaland and Alexander Isak, a total only Mohamed Salah (20) bettered.
A Premier League proven option who is likely to accept a reduced role in exchange for Champions League football, it’s a deal that makes plenty of sense.
