Sheffield Wednesday have recently been linked with a move for Ben Mee.

The Owls are yet to make a single signing this window due to owner Dejphon Chansiri’s financial mismanagement, which saw the club restricted in their business by various transfer embargoes.

A number of those embargoes have now been lifted, which means that the Steel City side can complete some transfer dealings but are still under strict parameters as to what they can and can’t do by the English Football League’s Club Financial Reporting Unit.

The Guardian recently reported that Wednesday have been offered the chance to sign Mee following his exit from Premier League side Brentford, alongside former Leeds United captain Liam Cooper.

With almost 500 games played during his career, the experience the ex-Burnley defender would bring to Hillsborough during their current struggles could prove invaluable.

Speaking exclusively to Football League World, Sky Sports pundit and former EFL striker, Don Goodman, believes that Mee would be an excellent addition for the Owls.

“Ben Mee is 35 years old now and played seven games in the Premier League last season,” stated Goodman. “He also featured in 16 Premier League games the season before.

“He’s never been a centre-half known for his pace, but his reading of the game is exceptional. So, there's no reason that Sheffield Wednesday wouldn’t be interested in Mee if they can get him on a free transfer.

“When you look at the fact that in two games so far, they’ve had a 2-1 defeat to Leicester City on the opening day and then a 3-3 draw against Bolton Wanderers, who had 10 men for a long spell in that game, defending is an area that they need to brush up on.

“They're conceding too many goals. I'd understand if Sheffield Wednesday were to bring him in.”

Mee would provide Wednesday with some much-needed experience

After 14 years with Burnley and Brentford, Mee has a wealth of top-flight experience and was operating at that level up until this summer. Therefore, he still has the skillset and physicality to comfortably perform in the Championship.

These attributes would be massive for Wednesday in their current state, with his leadership qualities sure to help galvanise the dressing room at Hillsborough.

The Steel City side have shown real unity in their performances this term, but with such an inexperienced, young squad, it is imperative that Henrik Pedersen balances that out with some experienced operators.

It’s unlikely that Wednesday will get many better transfer opportunities in the next few weeks, so they must take advantage of Mee’s situation whilst a deal is still possible.
