Eddie Howe and Newcastle United have long been linked with Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

The striker now seeing his Everton contract set to end in three weeks time.

David Moyes is still trying to persuade Dominic Calvert-Lewin to stay, but difficult to see that happening, especially at such a late stage.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin has consistently refused to sign a new deal at Goodison Park and looks sure to leave after nine years at the club.

The big question though is which club next?

The striker has been speaking on the High Performance Podcast and has admitted he wants to be at a club that can offer Champions League football, which obviously Everton can’t do as things stand, along with most other Premier League clubs.

Hearing Dominic Calvert-Lewin speak on this podcast, I think it appears abundantly clear he will be leaving Everton, not just with what he is saying regarding having Champions League ambitions.

Personally, I think that Dominic Calvert-Lewin could well end up at Newcastle United and this could well be a deal that has been planned for some time. This is just my opinion though!

Dominic Calvert-Lewin actually celebrated his 28th birthday on the same day as we were very much celebrating defeating Liverpool at Wembley to win the League Cup.

I think this definitely feels like the right time to move elsewhere, judging by what the striker is saying. This will be the key move of his career, at the age of 28 he will surely be looking for the right club to be at these next three or four years.

If there was a sizeable transfer fee to pay then I would say no chance, with Eddie Howe and Newcastle United’s model of investing the major money in players who are early 20s at the oldest. However, with major squad strengthening to happen this summer, I could well see a free agent such as Dominic Calvert-Lewin coming to St James’ Park, allowing the club’s budget to stretch as far as possible for other positions that need strengthening.

“I have to be careful with what I say, because I am still contracted to Everton, I have a long history with Everton and a big respect for the club…

“[But] The main thing for me is that I want to win.

“I want to be in a winning environment.

“The last three or four seasons it has been about survival.

‘When I started my career I wanted to play in the Premier League.

“Play for England a go to major tournaments with England.

“Play in the Champions League.

“I have played in a major tournament for England, I have played in the Premier League…but I haven’t played in the Champions League.

“There are still things I would like to achieve before my time is done.

“To have the opportunity to decide potentially where that place will be.

“If it gives me the best opportunity and environment to win and score goals…

“Then that would be the return of me to the England team and playing in the Champions League.

“That has been my driver to play at the highest level possible.

“My representation of that is the Champions League, World Cups, Euros, getting into that bracket of elite players.”

Dominic Calvert-Lewin has started 75 Premier League matches and scored 17 goals in the league, these past four seasons.

In the 2019/20 and 2020/21 seasons, it was 62 Premier League starts and 29 goals in the league.

A mixture of injuries, Everton a shambles of a club, managers playing very negative football, plus of course the player himself not regularly able to match his previous form, have all played a part in his career drop-off.

Eddie Howe has worked his magic on so many players already at Newcastle United, barely a single one who hasn’t shown significant improvement under him, both inherited players and Howe signings.
