Ross Wilson is being tipped for a potentially big move - not long after snubbing the Terriers
League One side Huddersfield Town were turned down by Nottingham Forest's Ross Wilson to return to the club for their sporting director job, and he's now on the radar of Newcastle United for the same role.
The Terriers have been looking to bolster their ranks off the pitch - not just with new manager Lee Grant, but also with a replacement for former sporting director Mark Cartwright, who departed close to the end of last season after two years in the job.
They attempted an approach for Forest chief Wilson in recent weeks, but it appears he has much bigger admirers in football.
As first reported in the middle of May by TEAMtalk, 41-year-old Wilson was a shock target for Huddersfield, who were looking to take him from the City Ground to run footballing operations off the pitch at the John Smith's Stadium.
The report claimed that Wilson was tempted by the opportunity, despite their League One status, however, journalist Pete O'Rourke revealed last week that the ex-Rangers director of football had turned down the chance to return to West Yorkshire, having been at the club between 2012 and 2015 as head of football operations, as well as being a member of the board.
Alan Nixon has since stated that former Hearts chief Joe Savage will be offered a contract by Huddersfield owner Kevin Nagle to take on the role, whilst Wilson has a fresh admirer in the form of Newcastle United.
As per the Daily Mail, the Magpies have Wilson under consideration to replace Paul Mitchell at St. James' Park, who has lasted just one year in the sporting director job, and if he lands the role, the Scotsman will be working with a UEFA Champions League outfit as opposed to the League One club he turned down.
Despite him working at the club for three years early on in his career, it was always going to be a challenge to persuade Wilson to return to Huddersfield.
Wilson has been going up and up in his career since departing Town, going from Southampton to Rangers and then on to Nottingham Forest - a drop back down the leagues to Huddersfield, even if he were to have more control of the first-team and transfers as opposed to what he does at the Tricky Trees, was never really that realistic.
