FLW spoke to Carlton Palmer to discuss Tottenham's interest in Leeds United youngster Harry Gray

Former Leeds United midfielder Carlton Palmer believes that Harry Gray will remain at Elland Road for years to come despite interest from Tottenham and has warned him about making the move to the Premier League club soon.

It's been reported by TBR Football that Ange Postecoglou wants to reunite Harry with older brother Archie, who made the move to North London in the summer for a reported fee of around £30 million.

The 15-year-old is yet to make his competitive debut for Leeds, but has impressed for the club's youth teams, and was even given the chance to play for the first-team in pre-season, coming off the bench in the Whites' 3-0 win over Yorkshire rivals Harrogate Town.

Gray broke into Leeds' U18 side at the age of 14 last season but is yet to get going this season after suffering a back injury, but is seen as someone with huge potential, and the likes of Arsenal, Newcastle United, Liverpool and Chelsea have all previously linked with the 15-year-old striker.

This means that Leeds have a battle on their hands to keep him at Elland Road, but Palmer is confident that the youngster won't depart in the near future.

Palmer, who played 119 times for Leeds between 1994 and 1997, believes that Gray's family connections with the club, coupled with his age, means he won't be leaving Elland Road anytime soon, despite the obvious attraction of reuniting with his brother in North London.

Speaking exclusively to Football League World, Palmer said: “Tottenham Hotspur and Ange Postecoglou are looking at bringing in young English talent. They signed Archie Gray from Leeds for a fee of £30 million, and he’s already made appearances in the Premier League.

“They’re keeping tabs on his younger brother Archie Gray, with the Premier League side hoping to reunite the 15-year-old with his brother.

“It’s one hell of a gamble for such a young player, but the 15-year-old has already accelerated through the ranks, making his debut for the U18’s when he was still 14, scoring in a 4-3 defeat to Sunderland last October.

“Harry Gray finished the campaign with eight goals in 11 games despite missing the majority of the season.

“Unfortunately, he’s picked up an injury, so his season hasn’t kicked off yet. Obviously, with his brother down there, it would entice Harry to want to go there to a big club, but they’re a great family, and they’re Leeds through and through, and I think that they would look at Harry going through his apprenticeship like his brother did and build up a reputation where big clubs come calling.

“You don’t want to be going to a big club now as a young player and not playing. Archie’s already involved with the first-team and that’s what you want, because otherwise you may as well stay at Leeds United and play more games.

“It’s always going to be difficult when brothers are concerned, but I think him being a Leeds supporter and his family playing there, although there’ll be a pull, he’ll still be at Leeds United for years to come.”

Losing Harry Gray would be a huge blow for Leeds United

The 15-year-old is perhaps unlikely to feature for the first team this season, but there's no doubt that he's got the potential to become a star of the future, and losing him to Spurs would be a hammer blow, particularly after Archie's departure in the summer.

The Gray name is synonymous with Leeds, and Harry leaving would bring an end to the family's long association with the club.

It's clear that Gray is more likely to get first-team opportunities at Leeds than at a big club like Spurs, and he'd be better off breaking into the matchday squad at Elland Road before thinking about any move away.

The last thing that Gray wants to do is join a club where his path to first-team action is blocked, and you feel that he'd be better off biding his time in Yorkshire and getting some senior minutes under his belt over the coming years.
