Rangers are finally taking defence seriously amid the second serious link to surface in recent days, following on from soon-to-be-ex Middlesbrough stopper Paddy McNair.

We can now add José Ángel Córdoba Chambers of Bulgarian giants Levski Sofia to the mix, old foes of Rangers back in the 90s for those supporters of a certain vintage.

The 22-year-old Panama international, with a very impressive 10 caps for his nation, is out of contract next summer and Rangers would be looking to get him for a bargain £1.5M despite his £3M+ market value, obviously, due to the contractual situation.

The 6ft 2 defender, who has been known to fill in at left back as well, is one of those rarities in Rangers’ defence – a leftie. Yes, he’d be looked at as a partner for Paddy McNair in what could be a massively all-new defence next season.

He has spent almost all his significant career in Bulgaria, but this is very much a quality CB who is waiting on a major move into mainland Europe, and Rangers would be perfect.

Why?

Sofia are Bulgaria’s Rangers, a side widely-regarded as the biggest team in Bulgaria but who are at the moment not quite securing the championship there – but like Rangers Sofia are a ‘must-win’ kind of team and Chambers will already know the pressure.

CSKA and Ludogorets are the main top dogs there at the moment, and Chambers has been part of a Sofia side trying to eke its way back to the title.

He’s an experienced defender already, having been in international qualifiers, UECL qualifiers, and while we’re not painting him as Carles Puyol, he could be an excellent foil for McNair if Rangers are to completely overhaul the rearguard.

What’s for sure, we need more quality at the back and this lad isn’t a million miles from fitting into that.
