New York City FC made news at the end of 2024 with announcements and stadium groundbreaking for their new Queens, NY stadium coming in a few years. But the start to the 2025 off-season has been a quiet one, moving on from two players who’ve been on loan over the last few seasons.
In a previous article, I wrote about Thiago Andrade’s departure from NYCFC and trade via the Expansion Draft that now has him in Toronto. NYCFC has loaned out Andrade the last two MLS season’s and now have him officially off of their books. Another player who is now officially off of their books is defensive midfielder Nicolas Acevedo. NYCFC have transferred Acevedo to Brazilian side Bahia for an undisclosed fee. The 25 year old won a MLS Cup and Campeones Cup with New York before being loaned to Bahia in 2023 and remained on loan in 2024 as well.
NYCFC also traded backup goalkeeper Luis Barraza to D.C. United for $50k in GAM and potential for another $100k in conditional GAM. The 28 year old won MLS Cup and a Campeones Cup with NYCFC during his tenure there. He has 38 appearances for the club and even had the starting goalkeeper spot on the club at points during the 2023 season.
New York City FC and City Football Group now have two players who were “floating around” figured out. It’s time for the club to now see where things can progress on the field for them, and much of that starts with figuring out who the next Manager of the club will be following Nick Cushing’s departure.
