Manchester City are delighted to confirm that Laura Coombs has agreed to a one-year contract extension at the Club.
The midfielder moved to the Joie Stadium ahead of the 2019/20 campaign, and has made 135 appearances in all competitions for the Blues, the ninth most in our professional era.
She’s also scored 21 goals during that time, with three of those strikes coming in Manchester derbies, including a close-range header which earned a 1-1 draw in front of a record Etihad Stadium crowd of 44,259 for our Women’s team in December 2022.
A hugely popular and influential figure off the field as well as on it, Coombs was also part of the England squad who reached the 2023 World Cup final.
During her time at the Club, she’s helped City win both the FA Cup in 2020 and the League Cup in 2022 and is excited to help the team to further success in the future.
She said: “It feels good. Last year, it was a bit of an up and down year for me injury wise and then to have the backing of the Club and another chance to have another successful season with the Club has meant a lot to me.
“It feels like there’s a lot going in behind the scenes and not just what you see on the pitch
“I feel like it’s a really good time to be involved with the Club and it’s a really exciting time. The Club’s only going to go one way so I’m very happy to be here.”
Director of Football Therese Sjogran added: “We’re delighted that Laura’s decided to stay with us for another year.
“She’s a respected and popular member of the team, and one who we value highly on and off the pitch.
“Laura’s experience speaks for itself, and her work rate, professionalism and quality make her a fantastic role model for our younger players.
“I’m confident she’ll play an important role in an exciting new chapter for the Club.”
Laura Coombs’ legacy at Manchester City is already sealed before she embarks on her seventh full season at the Joie Stadium.
Only Jess Park and Lauren Hemp have been at the Club longer than the midfielder among the current squad, having joined ahead of the 2019/20 campaign.
She’s also on track to reach 150 appearances in 2025/26, a feat only six other City players have achieved in our professional era.
Indeed, like Park and Hemp, Coombs has remained a key figure throughout the numerous changes that are part and parcel of the top level. It’s rare for her to get the credit she fully deserves, though.
The midfielder’s approachable, unassuming demeanour off the pitch makes her a hugely popular member of the squad, and one that commands respect from the experienced pros and the exciting young talents in the squad in equal measure.
She wouldn’t have remained at the top of the game for so long, however, without being a fierce competitor on the pitch.
Coombs, in many ways, is a bit of a throwback to the traditional centre midfielder with her energy, tenacity and intelligence meaning she’s capable of playing in any position in the City engine room.
She’s even been deployed as a second striker at times, demonstrating her excellent link play, awareness and ability off the ball. Tracking a Coombs run into the area, at times, is like trying to catch smoke, as she’s shown with two of her three Manchester derby strikes in 2022 and 2025.
Our number seven has an eye for the spectacular too, though, and has scored some stunning long-range strikes during her time so far at City.
The Blues, on average, fielded the youngest starting XI across the Barclays Women’s Super League season in 2024/25, but the squad’s experienced core will prove essential to any future success under new Head Coach, Andrée Jeglertz.
And as her City story continues, Coombs will be desperate to play a starring role in our exciting new chapter.
