Chelsea are planning to offer Marc Cucurella a new contract, with the left back viewed as a key part of the long term project according to Fabrizio Romano.

Cucurella joined Chelsea from Brighton in the summer of 2022 in a deal worth £63m, but had a tough first season at Stamford Bridge.

The 27-year-old was booed by supporters, and almost joined Manchester United on loan in the the summer of 2023.

Chelsea plan to offer Cucurella contract extension

Cucurella ended up remaining at Chelsea, and after finishing the 2023/2024 campaign strongly and shining for Spain at Euro 2024 he hasn’t looked back.

The Spaniard went to another level last season under Enzo Maresca, and established himself as one of Chelsea;’s most important players.

The left back was a real threat in the attacking third, and scored seven goals last season, including the crucial winner against Manchester United.

Maresca has praised the intelligence of Cucurella, and the redemption arc he’s been on at Chelsea is quite the story.

Cucurella had been strangely linked with a move to Saudi side Al-Nassr, which has subsequently been shut down, and Romano has now shared an update on his future.

He took to X.com and said:

“EXCL: Chelsea plan to offer new deal to Marc Cucurella, key part of the long term project.

“Al Nassr links not confirmed, no talks as #CFC see Cucurella as important player.

“Jorrel Hato would be back up at LB and also key addition as centre back.”

Cucurella is currently under contract until 2028, so there’s no rush, but a new deal is a fair reward for his consistently brilliant form.

Chelsea close in Jorrel Hato deal

With Cucurella excelling, the Blues are closing in on a deal for Ajax star Jorrel Hato, with negotiations believed to be at the final stages.

Chelsea currently have no back-up for Cucurella in the squad, and would have a serious problem if the Spain international got injured.

Hato has been identified as the player they want, and the 19-year-old can play as both a left back and centre back, which makes him a good fit for Maresca’s stystem.

Chelsea are prepared to pay £44m, but Ajax are thought to want around £50m, with a compromise expected to be reached.
