There has been plenty of debate about Mohamed Salah’s future and Liverpool’s failure to agree a new contract with him.

The 32-year-old’s excellent form in the Premier League this season has sparked talk that Liverpool should be pushing the boat out to retain him.

However, his efforts in the club’s failed Champions League campaign highlight why they need to move on from him this summer.

Salah’s time is up at Liverpool

The Egyptian forward has bagged 27 goals and 17 assists in 29 Premier League appearances this season. Those are superb statistics.

However, a tally of three goals and four assists in nine Champions League outings paints a different picture. Those numbers are not bad, but not great.

In simple terms, Salah has been making hay in the Premier League because he rarely faces world-class left-backs -a flat-track bully and all that.

By contrast, his anonymous performances against Paris Saint-Germain’s Nuno Mendes contributed to Liverpool’s early exit from the Champions League.

The 32-year-old has been a fine servant to Liverpool, but breaking the bank to retain his services makes no sense for a club with ambitions of being kings of Europe.
