Chelsea were dreadful defensively on all 3 goals last night, but it was the third which prompted something of a rant from Gary Neville.

He picked on Levi Colwill in particular, who had given the ball away but thought himself to be fouled. The defender sat on the floor appealing which Brighton raced away with the ball towards the goal he was supposed to be defending.

“He’s still young, and he’s got a lot of learning to do, as have those other Chelsea young players, but they’ve got to get stronger in their bodies and really physical and aggressive, and that’s tough for a young player, but he’s learning on the job and that’s really tough for a young centre half,” Neville said.

Jamie Carragher then had his turn to be critical – he pointed to the Liverpool game earlier in the season, where he noted that Chelsea had outplayed the Reds for the majority of the game, but eventually crumbled defensively when they started to be put under physical pressure at the back.

He suggested that the Blues defenders all needed a “pint of scouse” to build them up and bulk them up to something close to what was needed at Premier League level. We fear it may take more soup to solve this team’s rancid apathy.

Too weak, too soft, too hesitant to compete at this level

They also both noted how Jarrod Bowen – who isn’t big at all but it hard working and tough and committed, had also caused trouble on Monday last week. It was a mistake from Colwill that allowed Bowen in to score in that game. The defender later apologised.

The evidence is mounting – even these pundits who don’t watch us every week are seeing the same thing.
