Rangers defender John Souttar is gradually becoming a cult-hero at Ibrox, and he continues to impress for Scotland as well.

The Gers defender started for Scotland against Croatia at Hampden Park on Friday night and produced a solid performance, helping his side win 1-0 in the UEFA Nations League game.

The 28-year-old centre-back has been the pillar of strength at the back for Rangers this season. He has started in ten SPFL games and has been one of the most consistent performers for the Bears, even though his teammates haven’t quite reached the same dizzy heights.

He has been so influential this season that Barry Ferguson suggested that he should take the armband from James Tavernier if Philippe Clement decides to part ways with the veteran full-back.

Souttar struggled badly with injuries when he first joined from Heart of Midlothian, but he has gradually grown into a key player at Ibrox this season.

What Scottish media has been saying about the Rangers defender

The Daily Record noted that the 28-year-old delivered yet another “big performance” for his country.

He closed down the space really well and made some vital blocks. The newspaper has given him an 8/10 rating for his performance.

They wrote: “Another big performance, defended box brilliantly, closed down space, made vital blocks and good use of ball. Too quick for Petar Sucic at red.”

The Scottish Daily Mail was impressed with his ability to read the game. He was strong and sharp and ensured the defence kept a clean sheet. They also gave him an 8/10 rating.

They wrote: “Strong, sharp, and read the game well. More than anyone, he prevented Croatia turning early dominance into goals.”

Stats: How Souttar fared v Croatia

Souttar was simply outstanding at the back. He made one tackle, one interception, three clearances and made two vital blocks.

He won 100% of his deals (seven out of seven) and managed 87% passing accuracy.

Clement will now expect that Souttar will continue his impressive form for the Rangers after the international break.
