In the closing stages of the match, with Bayern leading 3-0, Augsburg pressed for a comeback. However, the focus shifted when Boey jumped into an aerial duel with Robin Fellhauer, making head-to-head contact.
Fellhauer remained on the pitch for several minutes before being taken to the hospital, while Boey received a yellow card.
Augsburg manager Sandro Wagner was furious with Boey’s immediate reaction. “I would have wished that he didn’t just walk away so cool - too cool for the world - but that he said sorry straight away, and not only when he saw that the young man couldn’t move anymore,” he said.
He also criticised some Bayern players on the bench who protested the foul. “Maybe some of them should have switched their brains on a bit quicker instead of complaining. You just don’t do that,” Wagner added.
Fellhauer’s family were reportedly in tears in the dressing room following the incident. Despite the severity, Fellhauer has since been discharged from hospital, with a diagnosis of a serious concussion and minor facial fractures that do not require surgery.
Boey took to Instagram to apologise directly to Fellhauer, writing: “Once again, sorry for what happened. Get well soon.”
Bayern coach Vincent Kompany defended his player, noting that Boey had already apologised and may not have fully understood the gravity of the situation initially. “Perhaps he didn’t fully understand the situation straight away,” Kompany said, while wishing Fellhauer a speedy recovery on behalf of the club.
