Aston Villa left-back Lucas Digne is set to sign a new two-year contract extension, according to Sky Switzerland journalist Sacha Tavolieri.

The Frenchman has just one year left on his current contract and has been linked with a move away from the Villa Park club this summer.

However, Villa manager Unai Emery trusts Digne and is keen to keep him at the club.

The 32-year-old made 45 appearances across all competitions last term, weighing in with seven assists. Staying at Villa will boost his chances of going to the 2026 World Cup with France.

This summer represented the best time for the Midlands club to sell him instead of leaving as a free agent next summer.

The deal has not been signed yet, as more meetings have been scheduled between both parties to discuss terms.

However, Digne has given the green light for the extension, and Villa are eager to wrap things up quickly.

Lucas Hernandez’s move to the Saudi Pro League gives him the chance to establish himself as France’s starting left-back, provided he impresses in the Premier League and Europa League next term.

However, he will need to keep proving himself and ensure he remains ahead of Ian Maatsen at Villa for him to convince Les Bleus manager Didier Deschamps.

Villa are looking to win major silverware and finish in the top-five next season after narrowly missing out on Champions League qualification at the end of last term.
