The 22nd February is a date that continues to be talked about in French football. It was when the famous ‘corruption’ remarks were made by Olympique de Marseille president Pablo Longoria after sending off Marseille defender Derek Cornelius during a match away to Auxerre. According to Centre Presse de l’Aveyron, as relayed by RMC Sport, an amateur referee Cryril Bernard has been suspended by the disciplinary commission of his district league for four months after criticising referee Jérémy Stinat following the game. Bernard has been equally hit with an €180 fine after having stated “Mr Stinat’s match was unworthy of a professional referee’ and that amateur referees risked being disgusted “by all this hypocrisy between the authorities and would stop refereeing” in a social media post. Meeting last week, the commission considered his behaviour “contrary to morality and ethics or damaging to the honour, image or reputation of the FFF, its Leagues or Districts, the Professional Football League, one of their managers, a subject or a third party, or, more generally, French football”The amateur referee, who has since been demoted to the departmental level, announced that he will not appeal. He also assured that he would stop officiating, unless needed by his local club. GFFN | George Boxall
