AC Milan have submitted an official bid to sign Liverpool defender Joe Gomez before the transfer window closes (h/t journalist Fabrizio Romano).
They have been in talks with Liverpool over a permanent deal, with Gomez identified as their priority after missing out on Manchester City’s Manuel Akanji.
Negotiations are ongoing, but any agreement depends on Liverpool signing Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace.
Liverpool have been pushing to finalise a £35 million move for Guehi, who is in the final year of his contract and unwilling to sign an extension.
Palace are under pressure to cash in before losing him for free next summer, and Liverpool want him in place before allowing Gomez to depart.
The 28-year-old has made over 200 appearances since arriving from Charlton Athletic in 2015.
Milan manager Massimiliano Allegri views him as an ideal partner for Fikayo Tomori and a proven defender who can adapt quickly to Serie A.
However, Liverpool are wary of leaving themselves short in defence.
With Ibrahima Konate reluctant to extend his contract amid interest from Real Madrid, and Virgil van Dijk nearing the end of his career, the club views Guehi as a long-term option.
The England international has been earmarked as van Dijk’s eventual successor and could partner with him before taking over.
Milan’s pursuit of Gomez comes as they explore alternatives, with Villarreal’s Juan Foyth also under consideration.
But Gomez is their preferred option, having already proven himself at Champions League level.
Palace explored the idea of a Gomez-Guehi swap deal earlier this summer, but Liverpool rejected the proposal outright.
Newcastle United have previously shown interest, with their highest bid of £65 million with add-ons turned down last year.
Despite Gomez recently expressing his happiness at Liverpool in a post marking his ten years at the club, the late bid from Milan has left his future uncertain.
Liverpool still have until Monday to reshape their squad, with Guehi and Newcastle forward Alexander Isak among their remaining targets.
