Since returning from the winter break, Zulte Waregem have struggled. The side looked a sure fire bet to return to the Belgian Pro League at the first time of asking. However, they have only one once since returning, with three defeats and one draw. Those defeats have been costly as two have come against sides also chasing promotion. They have dropped out of the automatic promotion spots and into the play-off spots.
This weekend the side face Club Brugge NXT and it feels like it is a must win game. With Beerschot’s lead at the top of the table growing to six points over them, if they want to keep in touching distance they need to be getting three points against the side currently in 11th place.
The side have kept key players from previous years who have plenty of experience within Belgian football. Former Club Brugge captain Ruud Vormer decided to stay and help the side in their promotion push. One time Burnley striker Jelle Vossen already has 10 goals, while summer signing Abdoulaye Traore leads the team with six assists.
Zulte Waregem are entering a period where they face a number of sides they should beat, with Francs Borains, SL16 and Anderlecht futures their next few fixtures. On the 15th of March they host Beerschot at home before a trip to Deinze the following weekend. If they can put a run together now, they could go into those games with chances to leapfrog both sides who currently occupy the automatic promotion spots.
