In an interview with Het Nieuwsblad, Zulte-Waregems 19 year-old verstaile midfielder Modou Tambedou spoke of his ambition to play for the Senegalese national team in the future. Tambedou said “Of course I dream of the national team. As a little boy I occasionally went to international matches in the old Stade Léopold-Sédar-Senghor in Dakar. What an atmosphere. That is my ultimate wish as a footballer. But I don’t want to skip any steps right now. I’m in no hurry”.

Tambedou can play either in central midfield or at centre-back and has been used in both positions by head coach Mbaye Leye. Former Zulte-Waregem attacker Leye was also eligible for Senegal, getting three caps for the Lions of Teranga. Tambedou was asked during the interview which position he preferred, jokingly responding that he’s happy to play where Leye decides, despite preferring playing a deeper midfield role.

Despite his young age, Tambedou has been one of the better players for a struggling Zulte Waregem this season. The teenager has played 16 games, scoring once against bitter rivals Kortrijk. In the interview the youngster also spoke of emulating his idol Kalidou Koulibaily, the former Napoli defender who led Senegal to their first AFCON title in 2021.
