Part of the golden generation, Sergio Busquets remains as possibly the last standing member of Barcelona’s legendary Pep Guardiola team. The Spaniard currently captains the club, but his future has come into question with less than six months left on his contract.

Busi seemed intent on leaving, with strong rumours suggesting that his future lied in MLS with Inter Miami. However, Xavi is doing his best to get the player to renew his contract for another season.

According to Helena Condis, the Barcelona coach has asked Busquets to extend for another season. He believes there is no direct replacement for him in the squad, and wants him to continue until the club is in a financially stable place to sort out a long-term replacement.

Busquets, meanwhile, has irrefutable offers on his table. Clubs from Saudi Arabia seem to be interested in getting his services. The report suggests that one of the recent proposals he has received is worth nearly €20 million in salary per season.

The captain is yet to decide on his future, though. Largely because Barcelona are yet to offer him a formal extension offer. Further, he knows that he would have to take a pay-cut to continue with the Catalan giants.

Xavi has publicly expressed his desire to continue working with Busquets. He addressed the issue in his recent pre-game press conference ahead of Barcelona vs Sevilla, too.

“In the end, we all work together and the decision is his. We are waiting to see what he decides. He is a very important person inside and outside, he is the captain, he is part of everything and he has earned the right to decide his future. If he can continue, I’d be delighted.”

As for replacements, it seems Barça are torn between two players. Xavi prefers the services of Real Sociedad’s Martin Zubimendi, while president Joan Laporta believes Wolverhampton Wanderers’ Ruben Neves will be a better option.
